Why kids love WriteShop: Four students tell their stories

by | Jan 2, 2021 | WriteShop I & II, WriteShop Junior, WriteShop Primary

We know that kids love WriteShop. In our 20 years of providing homeschool writing curriculum, we’ve heard again and again from relieved parents who find success with WriteShop after other writing programs failed to excite or inspire their kids.

  • It works for the avid writer who goes on and on but without much structure or conciseness.
  • It works for the halting writer who simply doesn’t know what to say.
  • It works for the high schooler who needs to nail essay writing in preparation for college assignments.

For example, a 12-year-old using Junior Book E said,

“I really loved the writing prompts because they made me think of things that I wouldn’t have on my own. They inspired me to write a little bit everyday and I think my writing has gotten better. The [Junior] Writer’s Notebook is my favorite part. I learned some things about editing my stories, too, even though that isn’t as much fun as writing. It makes my stories better and that’s important.”

Kids explain WriteShop in their own words

Watch the video below embedded below to see other WriteShop students who recorded their thoughts about the curriculum.

You may be thinking that they rehearsed their stories, and of course they did! Planning and recording these clips became another real-life writing and publishing activity.

[Their words are transcribed below.]

Callie B., age 10 ½, 5th grade, from Oregon

Using WriteShop Junior Book F

This is my first year using WriteShop, and I love it! So far, I’ve written an adventure story, which is presented as a walking stick; a tall tale, which helped me learn how to use idioms and metaphors; and a mystery story. The brainstorming activities really help make the lessons interesting. WriteShop makes learning to write fun.

Teddy LeMoine, age 11, 6th grade, from Wisconsin

Using WriteShop I

I love WriteShop. It gives me step-by-step direction, so my work is totally planned out. I used to hate writing, but now writing is my favorite part of the day. If you are thinking about homeschooling, you should get WriteShop.

Emilie Schertzer, age 8, 3rd grade, from New York

Using WriteShop Primary Book C

Be sure to watch the video for the context of Emilie’s quote. It’s so cute!

I love WriteShop because I like making my mom write stuff. And it was really fun making this mobile, I think it’s called. And I was thinking the higher it is, the earlier in the story it is. I love WriteShop! Bye!

Gabrielle Schertzer, age 10, 5th grade, from New York

Using WriteShop Junior Book F

I love WriteShop. This is a quilt that I made. It allowed me to be creative with my pictures and with my words. It’s the story of Luna Billfoot, the daughter of Slue-Foot Sue and Pecos Bill. It was really fun to make it. Thank you, WriteShop!
