Many children, when faced with a blank piece of paper,  find that they have a blank mind to match. At times, a simple writing prompt or story starter is all it takes to prime the pump. These fun writing prompts for children are certain to delight and inspire even your most reluctant writers. Try one on for size!

1. Odd Couple

A ship carrying animals to a zoo in Argentina is blown off course. A giraffe and a chimpanzee, the only survivors, find themselves shipwrecked in Antarctica. Write a story about a friendship that forms between these two animals and the penguin that comes to their aid.

2. Sweet Dreams?

Make a list of five things that make it hard for you to sleep at night (lumpy pillows, scary movies before bedtime, etc.). Now, make a list of five things that help you fall asleep easily.

3. The Art of Tomatoes

Write a paragraph titled “How to Draw a Tomato.” Explain the complete process, from gathering supplies to displaying the finished artwork.

4. Stealth Mailbox

The Postal Service has announced a contest for the best camouflage on a front yard mailbox. Describe your prize-winning plan to disguise your family’s mailbox.

5. Home is Where the Food … Was?

Imagine someone has asked you to convert the kitchen pantry into either a dollhouse or a bunker for plastic army men. Explain how would you furnish and decorate this new play space.
