5 journal prompts about character qualities | Homeschool writing prompts

by | Mar 6, 2019 | Writing & Journal Prompts

These journal prompts about character qualities focus on 5 positive traits: self-control, generosity, neighborly love, courage, and prudence.

“Our character is much more than just what we try to display for others to see, it is who we are even when no one is watching. Good character is doing the right thing because it is right to do what is right.” ~ What Is Character?

These journal prompts about character focus on positive traits each of us should strive to develop: self-control, generosity, neighborly love, courage, and prudence. Invite your kids to choose a prompt for today. Then, consider revisiting the other prompts as time permits.

1. Press on Toward the Goal

Temperance is the character quality that allows us to restrain ourselves and master our physical desires. This kind of self-control is especially important for athletes who are training to compete for a prize. Write about the obstacles an athlete faces, such as turning down tasty junk foods; overcoming the temptation of laziness; or training when it’s cold, dark, or rainy.

2. More Blessed to Give

Generosity is the character quality of being kind and unselfish. It’s the willingness to freely give of our time, money, and resources. In a paragraph or two, write a story about a generous person. Try to include as many of these words as you can: Christmas Eve, duct tape, silver candlesticks, secret, mice, alley, limousine, empty.

3. Love Your Neighbor

What makes a good neighbor? Perhaps it’s someone who listens over the fence when you need to talk or leaves freshly baked cookies on the front porch when your mom is sick. Write a short essay that includes at least three actions or character qualities of a first-rate neighbor.

4. Be Strong and Courageous

Courage is the character quality that allows us to do what is right in the face of danger, pain, discouragement, or fear. Write a short story that illustrates the importance of courage. Incorporate at least three of the following words into your story: superpower, spaceship, pirate, cliff, blizzard, fog, tent, danger, darkness, friendship bracelet, lantern, stormy.

5. Wise in Heart

Prudence is the character quality that allows us to look ahead and decide on the most wise and morally upright course of action. Write a story with at least two characters – one who displays prudence and makes wise decisions and choices, and one who does not.
