Invite your kids to choose one of these creative writing prompts for Valentine’s Day. Before you know it, they’ll be thinking of ways to love a neighbor, design a descriptive dinner menu, or have fun with conversation hearts!
1. Sweet Sentiments
Did you know that conversation heart candies have been around since 1866? Pretend you work for a greeting-card company. Combine two or more of the conversation heart words and phrases listed below to create several expressions for Valentine cards. Here are two examples:

2. How Do I Love Thee?
How do you know someone loves you, even if they don’t say it? Make a list of 10 ways people can express their love without actually saying “I love you.”
3. I Heart This Menu
Create a menu for Valentine’s Day dinner. Give menu items interesting names, such as “Cupid’s Cheesy Cauliflower” or “Be Mine Baked Chicken.” Be sure to invent a name for your “restaurant,” too, and display it at the top of the menu!
4. Love Thy Neighbor
In the Bible, Mark 12:31 says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Write a short story about a time someone showed love to a neighbor. Use at least five words from this list: selfish, mean, friends, family, meal, mailbox, porch, trash, hammer, attitude, pray, work, invite
