These Valentine writing prompts for kids will stir up some creativity as they write a love letter from a pet, think of reasons why they love someone, dream up a yummy Valentine dessert, or recall a personal experience. If Valentine’s Day has come and gone already, fear not! Your children can use these prompts any time.
1. Puppy Love
Pretend you’re a dog or cat. Write a letter to your owner thanking them for taking care of you and telling them the many reasons you feel loved.
2. Why Do I Love You?
Think of someone who is special to you. Make a list of ten reasons you love them. Put your list inside a Valentine card and give or mail it to them in time for Valentine’s Day.
3. Sweet Treats
Imagine that you are known far and wide for your baking and cake-decorating skills. Every year for Valentine’s Day, you design a signature creation to sell at the local bakery. What will you make this year? Will it be a fancy cake? An assortment of cake pops or cupcakes? A special Valentine’s Day cookie assortment?
What does your creation look like? How is it decorated? When you take a bite, how does it feel in your mouth? What does it taste like? Choose one, and write a paragraph describing it with vivid, mouth-watering words.
4. You Gotta Have Heart
Have you heard the expression, “It’s raining cats and dogs”? This is known as an idiom. An idiom is a saying or phrase that, over time, has taken on a special meaning that’s quite different from the words it contains. “Raining cats and dogs,” for example, doesn’t really mean animals are falling from the sky! It’s just an expression describing a heavy rainstorm.
A number of popular idioms include the word heart, such as the ones below. Choose one and write a paragraph telling about a time when you:
- Put your heart into something.
- Didn’t have the heart to do something.
- Followed your heart.
- Had a change of heart.
