These descriptive writing prompts for high school students will encourage your homeschool teens to describe objects, people, events, and personality traits. Remind them to use vivid vocabulary and avoid dull or weak words.

1. Trading Places

Think of a character from literature you might like to trade places with. It could be a modern character such as Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, or it could be a classical character such as Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Describe this character and explain why you’d want to make the switch.

2. Making Memories

Almost every family marks important milestones in their own special way. Describe a family celebration that has meaning for you, and explain why.

3. You’ve Got Personality

Are you shy, silly, or sensitive? Quiet or quirky? Gentle, generous, or gregarious? There are hundreds of words we can use to describe our character attributes or personality. Choose three adjectives that describe you perfectly. Write an essay giving examples of how each word accurately fits your personality.

4. If the Shoe Fits

Make a list of trendy shoe styles. Choose three from the list, describe each one, and explain why they’re so popular.

These descriptive writing prompts for high school students will encourage homeschool teens to describe objects, people, events, and personality traits.
