September writing prompts about crazy holidays

Our September writing prompts about crazy holidays will stimulate young children and teens to have fun writing about some lesser-known, wacky holidays.

The calendar features tons of wacky ways to celebrate every year! Our September writing prompts about crazy holidays will stimulate both young children and teens to write about a few of this month’s lesser-known (but definitely interesting) holidays. From creating a comic book to inventing a new cheeseburger, your kids will enjoy each of these fun and creative writing topics.

September 13: National Fortune Cookie Day

Do you love cracking open a fortune cookie at a Chinese restaurant and reading the little slip of paper tucked inside? Did you know the fortune cookie didn’t originate in China? It is believed to have been invented in California! September 13 celebrates the creation of the fortune cookie.

Imagine that you have been hired by the For Chun Cookie Company. Write 10 or more proverbs or fortunes that will appear in their cookies. Keep your messages short! Here are some examples:

Proverbs: Imagination is more important than knowledge, or The best way to have a friend is to be a friend.
Fortunes: You will soon travel to a new place, or You will take a chance in the near future.

For added fun, use this free fortune cookie message template. (Always ask your parents before downloading anything from the Internet.)

September 18: National Cheeseburger Day

In honor of that American icon, the cheeseburger, create your own idea of the perfect cheeseburger. What kind of meat will you choose (or will it be a vegetarian burger)? What kind of bun? Will you include sauces or condiments? Fresh or grilled toppings? Sweet or savory additions? Seasonings? Describe your creation using tempting details and vocabulary—and don’t forget the cheese!

September 22: Elephant Appreciation Day

Your local zoo has proposed permanently closing down the elephant exhibit. Write a letter to the zookeeper in which you explain how much your community appreciates the elephants. In your letter, give three reasons why you believe the elephants should remain a featured zoo attraction.

September 25: National Comic Book Day

Celebrate National Comic Book Day by creating your own comic strips! Here are some fun—and FREE—online resources to help you design the perfect comics.
