What is the most important component that you look for in a writing program for middle and high school students?

I look for something that will help prepare students for AP exams

As I’m not a writing instructor, it has to be something I can teach easily and that doesn’t take all day. If my kids don’t hate it, that helps a lot as well.

I believe that any writing program should be fundamentally natural meaning that the student should naturally become interested in it. It should also be something that does not evaluate or compare results, but in fact encompass and appreciate each writer for his/her differences in writing and not stick to one “strategy” or “template” .

I think a writing program needs to be enjoyable for the child. I am looking for something that not just assigns writing, but explains it in a way that makes it easy for the child to understand. Not just something that says, “Write about this or write about that.”

I look for a program that my child is willing to do without a fight everyday and it hat is easy for me to follow along and teach. With 6 children to help engaging curriculum is a huge help do get through our work. We have used Write Shop Juionor and my children love to do their writing everyday. I have been though so many other programs trying to find one that would work for my oldest who struggles with writing. I prefer a writing curriculum that
    – guides students in organizing their thoughts
    – explains differences in types of writing (narrative, instructional, persuasive, different points of view, .etc.) by providing examples using the same topic(s) Example: topic is beekeeping – A Day in the Life of a Beekeeper, A Day in the Life of a Bee, How To Collect Honey Without Getting Stung, Why Bees Are Good For Our Gardens, etc.
I also think age-appropriate, recommended authors or exemplary sources for each kind of writing would be helpful.

This is my first year using Write Shop I for 9th grade. It has been a huge blessing. I have seen my daughter go from struggling to successful. The materials are step by step and give clear instructions for each part of the writing process for the student and teacher. In my opinion when the student goes from hatred and tears for writing to enjoying it – the materials are accomplishing the goal. I look for materials – that promotes learning and enjoyment of learning. I am looking forward to starting our younger children on WriteShop beginning products.
