5 fun summer writing prompts

Summertime is filled with delightful possibilities. These fun summer writing prompts encourage kids to describe a frosty treat, invent a game, have fun with fireflies, and plan a vacation. One of these topics is sure to inspire even your most resistant writer!

1. All Scream for Ice Cream

Cones. Sundaes. Shakes. Warmer days make everyone hungry for ice cream! Think of the perfect ice cream treat and write a tempting description of its flavors, textures, and appearance.

2. It’s All in the Game

Invent a new outdoor game using any three of the following items: beach ball, hula hoop, sidewalk chalk, pool noodles, sponges, buckets, duct tape. Make a numbered list explaining the rules of your game.

3. Summer Plans

Summer often means fun and relaxation. What would you like to do this summer? Where would you like to go? Make a list of 5-10 ideas, and then describe three of these in greater detail.

4. Shine On!

Suppose fireflies are the only nighttime light source, but they are available in abundance. Explain how you will capture, store, and use these little lightning bugs to illuminate your house or garden.

5. To Camp … or Not To Camp?

Imagine that your family will be traveling to a national park this summer. Would you rather pitch a tent under the stars, sleep in a motorhome, or stay in a cabin? Explain your decision.
